Flowering, a spectacle of colour in the Ribera d'Ebre

A unique experience for all five senses. The flowering season of the fruit trees dyes the landscape of the Ribera d'Ebre in shades of white and pink. It is an ephemeral spectacle that, year after year, mesmerizes more visitors, who come to the Ebre region captivated by the beauty of nature.

The aim is to admire a unique natural and chromatic landscape, which also contributes to highlighting the agricultural and gastronomic activity of the towns of Ascó, Benissanet, Flix, Garcia, Ginestar, Miravet, Móra la Nova, la Palma, Riba-roja d'Ebre, Tivissa and la Serra d'Almos, and Vinebre.

"What makes visiting the Ribera d'Ebre during the flowering period attractive is that it is a unique moment that lasts a specific period of time, between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, which allows you to discover completely ephemeral landscapes," says Mònica Sabaté Cardona, tourism development officer for the Ribera d'Ebre Regional Council.

The flowering period usually covers the months of February, March and early April, but this year, due to the weather in recent weeks, this gift of nature is being postponed. “Flowering during the month of March is normal. However, in recent years, what was not usual were the high temperatures during January and February, causing flowering to occur earlier,” explains Mònica Sabaté.

On the website www.turismeriberaebre.org/proposta/floracio-ribera-ebre All information on guided tours is available.

Although in recent days this portrait of nuances has already begun to be seen, timidly in some areas of the region, with the explosion of the almond blossom. Later, as the days go by and the good weather arrives, the flowering of the peach trees begins and finally the cherry blossom takes centre stage.

For this reason, the Tourism Department of the Ribera d'Ebre Regional Council has prepared a catalogue with tourist experiences that range from walks through the fields in bloom to food and wine pairings, as well as complementary activities that open the range of experiences to literature and heritage.

"The programme of activities allows visitors to discover the region and see the fields in bloom at a spectacular moment, and, at the same time, combine the experience with the discovery of cultural heritage and tastings of local products. In other words, the aim is for visitors, beyond enjoying the flowering, to be able to combine the experience with other complementary proposals," explains the tourism development officer of the Ribera d'Ebre Regional Council.

Last year, it is estimated that more than a thousand people participated in the guided activities, after two atypical editions conditioned by the Covid pandemic.

Itineraries by car

Another way to enjoy the flowering is by following routes by car. In this sense, through the digital map available on the same website you can see the roads and tracks that allow you to admire the landscape in bloom in the region, as well as those points where you can appreciate the best panoramic views. It is worth remembering that those who choose to tour the flowering on their own cannot enter the fields in bloom, since they are private property, and that the trees and their flowers must be respected.

For this reason, it is advisable to use the guided tour services and share the experience of #LaRiberaenFlor.

"The essence of flowering is seeing the fields of trees in their splendour," says Rosa Martínez, head of the Benissanet Information Point. They are therefore keeping an eye on how the natural flowering cycle progresses in order to go out into the countryside and enjoy a walk through the fields of the town of Benissanet, an experience that also includes a visit to the Font Gran refuge and a tasting of pastissets.

The aim is to admire a unique natural and chromatic landscape, which also contributes to highlighting the agricultural and gastronomic activity of the towns of Ascó, Benissanet, Flix, Garcia, Ginestar, Miravet, Móra la Nova, la Palma, Riba-roja d'Ebre, Tivissa and la Serra d'Almos, and Vinebr.

Vicens Ayan (Tarvitur) comments that "what we propose is to enjoy the new annual cycle of nature, spring, when the fruit trees are in bloom." For this reason, he adds, "during the visits we also highlight agriculture, the cultivation process, the varieties, etc." All this without forgetting the connection of the territory with the Battle of l'Ebre and the orography of the space, structured by the Ebre river.

At the same time, the extraordinary beauty of the fields in bloom is a source of inspiration for the poet and novelist Vicenç Llorca, who will be offering a day of creative writing in Vinebre this Saturday.

In any case, the catalogue of guided activities and complementary experiences can be consulted through the Turisme Ribera d'Ebre website (www.turismeriberaebre.org/proposta/floracio-ribera-ebre). However, the information will be updated as the landscape of the Ribera d'Ebre lights up in white and pink.
