Flowering of the

Ericas in Trevinca

(April and May)

Every spring, the Pena Trevinca Mountains, the roof of Galicia, are transformed into a living canvas of color.

Trevinca in Bloom

After the winter thaw, when the snow retreats from the peaks, life re-emerges with a beauty as unexpected as it is overwhelming.

This is when the floral parade begins: wild daffodils bloom in time with the first warm rays of the April and May sun, marking the beginning of a natural cycle filled with light and color. But the most impressive moment comes with the flowering of the Ericas—Erica ciliaris and Erica tetralix— that cover the landscapes with an intense purple blanket.

These small flowers, humble but abundant, spread like a violet carpet between the valleys and slopes, accompanied by the bright yellow of the brooms (Genista purgans and Genista sanabrensis), creating a visual contrast of great strength and beauty.

In the wetter areas, lagoons and peat bogs complete this unique ecosystem with rich and diverse aquatic vegetation, making Trevinca a paradise for botanists, hikers, photographers, and landscape lovers.

Discovering the Ericas in bloom in Trevinca is a fleeting natural spectacle, revealed only to those who know how to wait for the right moment to enter this wild and silent territory. An unforgettable experience in the highest part of Galicia.

The flowering of the Gentians:
a unique botanical treasure

Trevinca's floral biodiversity does not stop with spring. In the months of July and August, another natural spectacle takes place: the flowering of the gentians, a genre of great scientific and aesthetic interest.

In Trevinca, the gentian populations are different from those in the rest of the Peninsula and Europe. A unique subspecies flourishes here, the Gentiana lutea aurantiaca, whose flowers have tones orange or reddish, in contrast to the characteristic yellow color of the common European variety (Gentiana lutea). This distinctive feature makes Trevinca an enclave of great botanical value.

In addition, during the summer season you can also see other mountain gentians such as the alpine or blue gentian, lto spring gentian (Gentiana verna) and the snowy gentian (Gentiana nivalis)

This range of species makes the summer flowering in Trevinca a first-class botanical experience.

Peña Trevinca: a protected natural treasure

The Pena Trevinca massif is part of the Natura 2000 Network and has been declared ZEC (Special Area of Conservation of Natural Values “Pena Trevinca”) and SPA (Special Protection Area for Birds, code ZEPA ES0000437).

In the municipality of To Veiga the highest peaks of Galicia are found:

  • Pena Trevinca (2,127 m)

  • Black Sorrow (2,212 m)
In addition to other Galician "Two Thousanders," and a group of wetlands, lagoons, and peat bogs of glacial origin that make this environment a true natural sanctuary.

Hiking in Trevinca: approved routes

The visitor can explore the area in complete safety thanks to several marked and approved hiking trails, also available in the official app SendeGal (Trails of Galicia):
