The cherry blossom in Jerte could be described as a blanket of white flower flakes on a green canvas and under a sky-blue dome. With the arrival of spring, nature gives us three weeks of white petals, adorning the branches of cherry trees, like bouquets adorning the slender arms of spring nymphs playing on an emerald meadow, and protected by a cerulean tunic.
If you want to feel immersed in a fantasy tale, in Jerte you can walk through the galleries that the grove forms, let yourself be carried away by the thoughts that invade you when you walk through this wonderful landscape, which makes you flood in a sea of emotions, since not only your eyes are delighted, but also the aroma that accompanies it.
Cherry Blossom
The exact date for knowing when the cherry trees will blossom depends on the weather, so if the temperature is pleasant the flowering will be earlier, but if rain clouds appear it is very likely that we will not be able to marvel at this floral spectacle until we see the clear, blue sky again. Flowering in the Jerte Valley usually occurs in the first half of April.
Not all cherry trees bloom at the same time. Depending on the area, some flowers open earlier and others later. The first ones are usually found in the lower altitude areas, and as the days go by, the cherry trees in the rest of the areas of the Valley bloom until they cover the coldest areas.
The Bloom dresses up
You will not only be intoxicated by a journey through the senses when you come to delight in the cherry blossom in El Valle del Jerte, but also by history. The inhabitants of the towns in the area celebrate the Cherry Blossom Festival, which attempts to project the life of the entire region, not only in the present, but taking a journey through time, from the past to the future.
For the enjoyment of this event, activities of all kinds are provided, both cultural and traditional, as well as gastronomic. During the event you will be able to contemplate the typical architecture of the area, which during those days will open its doors to invite you to discover the traditional way of life of the people who lived there.
However, what will truly enchant you is seeing the prodigious and admirable cherry blossom, a demonstration of the natural wonders of our planet, a display of white standing out against the fields, like a precious veil of albuginean lace over a beautiful green cloth, and highlighted by a clear, boundless vault.
Routes through the Jerte Valley
The best way to enjoy the cherry blossoms in these Extremaduran lands is to take a tour of the towns that make up the Jerte Valley, so that you don't miss a single detail of this spectacular event. To do so, as the cherry trees bloom in different areas, there are two recommended routes to recreate these beautiful panoramas.
We can take the linear route, which is about 30 km long and starts near Valdastillas, ending at the Mirador del Valle del Jerte, passing through Navaconcejo, Cabezuela del Valle, Tornavacas and Puerto de Tornavacas. The route is done by car and parallel to the Jerte River, so in some places along the route we will enjoy this landscape that accompanies the picture of the flowering.
Another alternative is the circular route, which is about 50 km long, starting in Valdastillas and going through Piornal, Barrado, Cabrero, Casas del Castañar, El Torno and Rebollar. This route can also be done by car, which invites you to make stops to fully immerse yourself in the charm of the cherry blossom.
Saying goodbye to spring
What better way to say goodbye to spring in Jerte than with a Cherry Fair? This is held in June and cherry tastings and samplings take place. Among all this joy, you will also find activities and workshops for all ages and styles.
Although it may seem that every year is the same, each spring is different from the previous one, with the prominence and splendor of the flowering of this magnificent fruit tree, the people who participate in this work of art, make the memories you take with you unique.
The Jerte Valley in the ripeness of the year
The cherry tree is literally a wonder of the world, not only does it give us its flowers during spring, but it also surprises us all year round. With the fall, its branches are covered in a reddish hue, and as these beautiful nymphs travel through the lands that please all our senses, we discover that, during the time of year corresponding to the months of September to November, in the northern hemisphere, trees of fire appear before our eyes, covering the ground like a blanket of warm colours, before welcoming the cold winter.
