Almond trees in bloom on the islands

Flowering in Santiago del Teide

The wonderful flowering of the almond tree does not only occur in Mediterranean areas, since in the Canary Islands we can enjoy the spectacular flowers, whose corolla consists of five albino petals, with a captivating pink gradient that manifests itself as you approach the fusion center of its delicate and whitish petals.

From the core of the flower we can see a five-pointed green star, which highlights the convergences of its petals; from its ends the pale domes stand out, on whose perfectly symmetrical crests its edge can be seen.

Almond blossom in Spain and the Canary Islands

Spain is the world's second largest producer of almond trees, although its natural area is located east of the Mediterranean Sea, since this tree is cultivated mainly for its seed.

It is thought that the almond tree arrived in Spain thanks to the Phoenicians, who transported its fruit, the almond, throughout the Mediterranean during their voyages.

In the Canary Islands, this tree was introduced during colonial times, and arrived there through the Europeans, so that today, the almond tree is naturalized on the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Fuerteventura and La Gomera.

Almond blossoms - Symbol in the three great monotheistic religions

For the three great monotheistic religions, the almond flower has a similar meaning, since all three have a similar origin, coming from Hebrew traditions, so the almond symbolizes light, the watchman, the listener and the awakener.

In the Jewish religion, almond blossoms represent the key to finding the secret of eternal life. However, when a person ate almonds, it meant that he had discovered the secret. Furthermore, the almond directly symbolizes the figure of Yahweh (God).

In the Islamic religion, both the flowers and the almond tree itself are a gift from Allah (God) to mankind. The direct symbolism of the almond blossom is the spectacular birth of these beautiful flowers before spring, encouraging mankind to welcome the arrival of spring as a new opportunity for life in the months to come.

In the Christian religion, the meaning of the almond retains the same concept inherited from the Hebrew tradition, that is, it represents eternal life. It is also said that the fruit of the almond is hidden in all human beings, and that this is one of the reasons why the Virgin Mary was able to give birth to Jesus Christ.

During the Middle Ages, painters of the time portrayed the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus inside a mandorla, an aureole, also called an almond because of its oval shape. In addition, this word, originally from Greek-Latin, literally means almond.

Commonly found in ancient religious writings, both Judaism and Christianity, the almond tree is referenced on several occasions, for example, when a staff made from an almond tree blossoms and houses ripe almonds, as an allegory of the staff bearer's connection to God.

The almond tree in literature

The almond tree has been present for millennia in different cultures, it is even represented in the literature of our country, as reflected in El Conde Lucanor, by Don Juan Manuel, an extract from the book says:

“And it happened that one day, being in Cordoba in the month of February, a snow fell; and, when Ramaiquía saw it, she began to cry; and the king asked her why she was crying and she told him that it was because he never let her on earth see snow.

And the king, to please him, had almond trees planted throughout the mountains of Córdoba; because, since Córdoba is a hot land and it does not snow there every year, in February the almond trees would appear to be in bloom and resemble snow, to make him lose his desire for snow.
